TrOY!

Greetings!

I finished the City of Troy for the upcoming CGC Xmas game this December 18th and thought I would post a snap or two.

I needed to build a representation of Troy, but not necessarily all of it since my plan was to have it sit against a table edge. The Greeks never surrounded the city anyway, so that justified my decision. I also wanted the whole thing to look a bit "toy-ey", as I would be using toys for the soldiers and siege equipment.

This is a shot of the materials I used. I decided to use a styrofoam core for the walls and towers. Then I would either texture by hand, or use the Hirst Arts' blocks to face them. In the end, I ended up doing a bit of both, but primarily relied on the blocks. Casting up the blocks was the most time consuming part of the project for sure, we it taking several weeks to cast enough of the facings to get the job done. Having said that, in warmer weather it would have gone much more quickly.

Here's the whole enchilida (or should I say gyro?). The inner building represents Priam's palace. It will be where Helen and the royal treasury (for looting purposes) will wait to be liberated by the Greeks.

A closeup of the front gate. I was originally going to use the Hirst wood planking "blocks" to face the doors, but decided against it and went with a quick carve with a hot knife instead. The grain on the blocks was too small (being nominally for 25mm) and the carving looks fine from normal viewing distance. The Greek soldier is a prepainted toy from Fencibles. I am gluing them all onto washers and will texture the bases before the game. This will help them stand and make them look better too boot (a good base goes a long way to help a poorly painted figure).

Things left to do: Base figures; paint the two Greek ships; paint the canvas; paint Boagrius (the not-appearing-in-the-books giant from the movie) and Patroclus, the only two figures I have to paint for this event.
